1. What are a few of the most common varieties of lisianthus?
Lisianthus comes in a variety of colors including peach, white, purple, cream, lavender, pink, green, variegated pink for the ABC. There are other verities like Roseanne Brown, and Coreli Light Pink, Lisianthus Japan Fringe.
2.What growing zone do they do best in?
Many growers do grow them under protective cover in areas with adequate rain, and most importantly low hot weather even in the summertime.
3.When should they be planted in the ground and when can people expect to see them flower?
Beginning of April each year is best to put lisianthus in the ground.
4.What type of soil do they respond well to?
Plant straight into the mud, but keep note when prepping the lisianthus beds in the spring, injust compost, cottonseed, and green potash for the source of potassium as well as a vast array of micro-nutrients needed. Plant them in clay soil because it holds water and nutrients well, but does not stay wet. If you do not have a greenhouse, you could order plants ready from a local nursery right before you are ready to plant and put them directly in the ground.
5.How often should they be watered?
These plants require soil that is always damp. water them as needed with a good drainage system.
6.Do they require fertilizer? If so, how often?
After planting, and to protect them, you can spray an emulsified mix of fish powder and or kelp powder to keep the lisianthus healthy while they develop their roots in the early months.
7.What light conditions do they require?
Make sure you protect them from rain, as this will produce spots on their petals. They love some extra attention, so you should feed them with nutrient-rich fertilizer during their growing season.
8.Should you cut them back at the end of the season?
Cut back the stalk to 2 to 3 inches above the ground when the seed capsule ripens in September or October. After it overwinters, lisianthus will be more vigorous and yield more flowers than it did the first year.
9.Why do lisianthus have a reputation of being difficult to grow?
Some say this is because it can be difficult to grow from seed.
10.Why are they a nice addition to a garden?
Lisianthus, often favored by our floral designers here at Irvine Florist Marketplace as an alternative to roses.
